Most retainer firms grow by adding consultants. We grow by adding depth to the consultants we already have. Twenty years in, Posimind is still a small team across four Indian offices — small enough that every name in the building knows every active mandate, large enough that no sector we name as a focus is run by a single person.
We say no to roughly half the mandates we are offered. The half we decline are almost always searches that need different DNA — volume hiring, junior recruiting, sectors we don’t know in depth, situations where what the client really needs is a coach or a consultant rather than a search firm. We would rather decline a brief than run it badly. The clients we do work with notice that, and most come back.
When we bring someone new in, three things have to be true. They have to know a sector deeply enough that they could have built a career inside one of its companies and chose instead to look at it from the outside. They have to be willing to tell a client what the client needs to hear, not what the client hopes to. And they have to be the kind of person we would put in front of any board in the country without a moment’s preparation. Most people who interview here don’t get in.
